There are so many memory foam mattress options on the market today. So why would you choose one option over another?

What makes a good or great memory foam mattress?

There are several factors to the feel and support of the mattress. Almost all foam mattresses are going to have a base support, support layers, and comfort layers. The fabric, type of foam, thickness of foam layers, and the density and firmness of the foam all make a difference in the overall comfort and support. Most memory foam mattresses are designed between 8-inches and 15 inches thick. Usually the base foam makes up 1/2 to 2/3 of the total mattress with the support layers and comfort layers making up a smaller portion. Sometimes the comfort layer is only 1 or 2 inches thick. The density is also important. How long a foam mattress lasts depends on the density of foam, and the weight of the sleeper. Memory foam mattresses range in density from 2.0 lbs to 5.3 lbs. The higher the density the more material per cubic inch, and generally less air. Most of the inexpensive bed-in-a-box foam mattress options are in the 2-3 lb density and usually will develop more wear-and-tear in a shorter amount of time. So when you are looking for a new mattress, you may want to consider investing in something higher quality that will provide a more consistent feel over a longer period of time.
